Taking some time for a National Day of Reflection on 23 March

End of life charity Marie Curie estimate that more than three million people have been bereaved since the pandemic began. Many of those affected haven’t been able to say goodbye properly, or to grieve. And even those who haven’t suffered a bereavement have had to deal with the sadness and isolation that comes from being apart from loved ones.

So, Marie Curie have chosen Tuesday 23 March (the anniversary of the UK going into the first national lockdown) as a day to reflect, think and grieve. You can read more about it on their website here. In support, we’ve added our name to their list of partners, which you can find here.

Time to remember, grieve and celebrate

The National Day of Reflection will give the nation and communities a moment to remember, grieve and celebrate everyone who has died during this time, whether from COVID-19 or something else. And to show support for families, friends and colleagues who are grieving.

How can I get involved?

  • Join the minute's silence at 12 noon on 23 March, and/or shine a light in the evening, to show your support for the millions of people who've been bereaved.

  • Take a moment to reach out to someone you know who's grieving. Have a chat, send a card, a message or spring flowers.

  • Join Marie Curie’s free online talks and conversations, featuring expert panels, bereaved families and celebrities throughout the afternoon.

  • Plant flowers to symbolise hope.

  • Share your flowers, lights, stories and messages of support on social media using #DayOfReflection and tagging @MarieCurieUK and us @MSSocietyUK.

Our Director of Services and Digital, Ed Holloway, says: “Grief is a very personal thing. I’m sure lots of people will find taking some time to reflect on the losses that we’ve experienced very helpful. I know I will.”

We know everyone processes grief differently. But, if bereavement has touched your life, there’s a booklet here which could help with both the practical and emotional elements. And if you, or someone you’re supporting, know somebody who is nearing the end of life, you can find information about that on our website here.
